cal walks from the Preseli Venture ecolodge and discover the quaint hilltop village of Mathry, with it’s stunning views across the Pencaer peninsular and the Irish sea. Meander down through the quiet Abermawr valley, through National Trust woodland, to reach the secluded beach of Abermawr. Then loop back to Mathry for a visit to the tea shop or local country pub.
Mathry is one of the oldest settlements in Pembrokeshire with it’s roots dating back to the Iron Age when it would have been a defensive fort positioned to see any approaching enemies. It now boasts an interesting church with ancient Ogham stone and it’s reported that Mathry was on the ancient pilgrimage route to St David’s.
Starting at the Preseli Venture Lodge, the route takes you up a bridleway (once an old country lane) right into the centre of Mathry village. Check out the ‘church of the Holy Martyrs’ before heading down the other side of Mathry hill on a series of footpaths linked by stiles through pretty farm land. Meandering through more pretty footpaths farm tracks, the route takes you briefly onto the coast path to access the quiet cove of Abermawr – a lovely spot for a picnic or swim. You’ll then head up through a beautiful wooded valley and along a peaceful country lane back to the Preseli Venture ecolodge or on to Mathry for tea and cake! This is a great walk for those blustery days when you want somewhere a little more sheltered to explore and equally lovely on a beautiful clear day – the views have to be seen to be believed!
